So, this was interesting. We went to the Polynesian Cultural Center. I knew there was a campus of Brigham Young University right near it, and I think I read that you could take a tour of it, but what I didn't realize is that this center is actually run by BYU. Turns out that they offer scholarships to kids from Polynesian countries to perform their cultural rituals for tourists. This felt a bit icky to me. James likened it to a football scholarship, but it just doesn't feel the same to me. Sports are not being required to perform sacred rituals for entertainment value. Sure it was educational, but I just couldn't shake the feeling that it was somewhat exploitative. But hey, James and E got to throw spears.
