Last Day

Whatever I had planned for our last day of vacation went out the window when we got to the airport and Ethan discovered there was a Comic Con museum in San Diego. It was in Balboa Park, which was a site of two world fairs. The park is huge, and has several museums. Ethan and James went to the ComicCon one and I went to a history museum and then another with a post secret exhibit. While there, we learned about a cannibal exhibit and Ethan really wanted to see it, so after lunch we went there.

Waffle King!

We stayed at a mid-century motel in San Diego with a restaurant called the Waffle King- so you know where we had breakfast! I had a churro waffle. It was absolutely amazing, I'm sure it was deep fried. Ethan had the chocolate chip. James didn't have a waffle.

San Diego Zoo

We wanted to break up our trip home/ time zone adjustment with a short stop somewhere on the way home. Flight availability plus the fact that none of us had ever been to the San Diego Zoo made this an easy choice as our stopping point. What I didn't realize is that this zoo is so expansive there are two locations, and the big draw for Ethan (the platypus) was at the other! So now we have a reason to go again. We started our trip with a bus tour around the zoo to get the lay of the land and see where we should head first.

It's a good thing we did, because this was our only chance to see the polar bear. Despite stopping by the habitat twice during the day, we didn't see him again.

We headed for the koalas as soon as we were off the bus, and they did not disappoint! The habitat was so you could view them from both sides so it made it easy to get a good look at them munching away on eucalyptus leaves.

From there we saw some primates.

And an amazing outdoor bird enclosure that you could walk through. This is the best bird exhibit I've ever seen at a zoo, it was incredible. I probably could have stayed there all day.

We went to an aardvark show

We rode on this crazy thing. Roller coasters, no problem- car precariously hanging from a cable? GET ME OUT OF HERE!

The view

This one was wildlife- not in a habitat

Of course we stopped by the koalas again before leaving. We tried a few times to see the wombats- but they just did not want to come out and play.
