Today we went to the top of Haleakala National Park to see the dormant volcano. It was very high elevation, and we were well above the clouds. We saw the two observatories that are at the top, you can read more about them here- https://haleakalacrater.com/maui/haleakala-observatory-maui/. One of them is a solar observatory and helps scientists study the sun.
We hiked the first part of the crater trail to see inside of it, and then we did another short hike on the way back down for a different view. All of the variation in color is apparently different minerals in the earth. It was very cold at the top and quite windy.
