Eli Whitney

I have wanted to check out the Eli Whitney museum for a while, so after we stopped for some bbq for lunch, we headed to Hamden. Today they had a special holiday break opening of their exhibit on the 100th anniversary of the erector set. They also had volunteers helping the kids create things, so Ethan decided to build a race car. It was a lot of fun. And it's right down the street from the Peabody, so I think we'll be back.

Train Show

After our snack and a couple of errands, we headed to the Fairfield History Center for their special train exhibit. We saw lots of electric trains, even a Percy whose eyes moved back and forth as Ethan demonstrated in the picture above. What he didn't anticipate was how much fun he would have pretending to be a Revolutionary War spy. While I was a bit dismayed that their account of the Culper Spy Ring omitted Benjamin Tallmadge, it was a lot of fun for Ethan to check out the secret code he developed and to "fire" the cannons. He may have had the spies confused with Paul Revere as he kept yelling "The British are coming!" but he's six, so I'll give him credit for having the right war. When we were finished exploring, we headed back to pick up James.

Morning Snack

We decided today was the day to try again to have the adventure we planned on for last Monday. Christmas Village is now closed, so we came up with plan B. James had to work half a day, so we dropped him at the office. While we waited for our next stop to open, we headed for the cafe to fuel up on some treats. Ethan had hot chocolate. No muffins for him, he wanted chocolate chip cookies!

Gingerbread House

We spent a lot of time on our gingerbread house this year. During assembly, one wall cracked and another completely crumbled. Instead of scrapping it, we decided to be clever. We decorated the inside. The crack in the wall is covered by the Christmas tree on one side and the snowman on the other. I'm not sure how well you can see inside, but we made a table and a fireplace. We put some fruit on the table and the gingerbread family who lives there is inside. One day after we had finished, we found Zach the elf sitting next to the house adding on a marshmallow snowman!

Lunch

After lunch we went to the Miss Washington Diner for lunch. Ethan took some pics with my phone. James had a miniature version of their enormous burger, and he even managed to fit it in his mouth. We were impressed. 

Fun with Friends

We were lucky to have a visit from Jeannie and Elise on Thursday. We met up with them and Charlene to have lunch. After that, we headed home for some fun play time. After dinner we had a little tea party. Ethan and Elise have wanted to use my tea set for ages, so I actually remembered in time to get it washed and ready. On Friday, we headed to the New Britain Museum of Art for a Maurice Sendak show. The kids also seemed to enjoy the rest of the museum.They wrote down comments about a piece of art the museum is thinking of purchasing and they explained a piece of art to several people. We had a great visit.

Merry Christmas!

After Ethan finished opening presents on Christmas morning, he summed it all up. "This is the best day ever!"

Congratulations, Mindy!

Last Saturday we headed to Long Island for my cousin Mindy's wedding. It was lovely, the day was warm for December and everything was beautiful. Ethan had a great time. There was a duck pond, and there was dancing and other kids to play with.

Busy Weekend

Our original weekend schedule included two birthday parties on Saturday and tea with elves on Sunday. One birthday party was rescheduled for January because of the snow, and we got a last minute invite to one on Sunday. Being a sucker for the poor December kids who get the shaft because everyone is too busy or the weather is lousy, I told Ethan we could go. So Sunday was a little hectic, but we enjoyed our lunch date with the elves and then had a great time at the science themed birthday party where the kids made lava lamps, oozy goo and glop. They even got these super cool glasses that made the candles look really fun.
