Last night Ethan wanted to read The Poky Little Puppy. You may recall that the last thing for dessert is strawberry shortcake. Ethan piped up and said he wanted to make that for dessert. I had been thinking earlier that day how we hadn't made it yet this year and it was about time. So this morning it wasn't too hot yet and we turned on the oven and baked the shortcakes. He talked about it all day and about how we had to go to the store to get whipped cream.
Meanwhile, this afternoon we went to his very first birthday party for a friend. This morning while we were talking about it he said "I make a cake for her." I said, "No Ethan, I think her mommy will have a cake for her." He got really upset, he thought it was up to him- we resolved it by making one in his kitchen. The party was so cute, it was for Teresa, one of his school friends who turned 3. All his school friends were there. It started off with a clown who made balloon animals. At first Ethan and his BFF Jack did not want anything to do with the clown. They hung back and wouldn't leave their mothers until they finally decided to play with each other and ignore the clown. When she said it was time for her to leave, that's when Ethan and Jack got interested. Of course then they wanted balloon animals- Ethan's request was very specific- he said he wanted an orange dog. That's exactly what he got. After the clown, the kids all sat around the table together on big chairs and benches- it was adorable- and waited for Teresa to blow out the candles. Everyone sang Happy Birthday, then Jack blew out the candles. It was funny, Teresa's mom lit them again and then she did the honors. Her cake was a teddy bear- like a sitting up 3-d teddy bear. Very impressive. Ethan enjoyed playing with her toys, especially the shopping cart and the cash register.
After the party, we went to the store to get whipping cream and a few other things. We got the other things and I almost got in line- then I asked Ethan what we forgot. He had NO idea. He usually remembers these things and keeps me on my toes. We had pizza we made on the grill and Ethan ate THREE pieces and strawberry shortcake.
