Edinburgh- Arrival

We arrived in Edinburgh around 11:30. We dropped off our bags while we waited for check-in time. We went to a place called Fat Hippo for lunch- it styled itself as an American hamburger restaurant and we thought it would be fun to see what that meant. It was ok, not great. We learned that "lemonade" has a different meaning there, it nearly always has fizz, and sometimes it's just 7up or sprite. When we walked to the local farmers' market and saw the paella and whole roasted pig, we somewhat regretted our decision. We did buy some berries, though. After we checked in we did a bit more wandering and found the castle. For dinner, we went to The Scran and Scallie, one of Tom Kitchin's restaurants. We had been rewatching Bourdain's shows from visits to Ireland and Scotland, and he went to another of his restaurants called The Kitchin. This one seemed slightly more accessible- no tasting menu, and billed itself family friendly. James had a steak pie, I had cod and tried courgette (that was NOT my favorite) and Ethan was rushed in ordering and picked a spelt and lentil burger, which he likened to a falafel. For dessert I tried sticky toffee pudding, Ethan had Eton mess, and I have no idea what James had- we all decided they like things even sweeter than Americans do!
