Hagley

On Monday, which in my opinion was the most beautiful weather-wise, we went to Hagley. It is the site of the DuPont gunpowder factory, which was the industry they were in when they first came to the US. Their home still stands, as do the foundations and recreations of many of the original structures. We took a tour of the house, rode on a bus- which may have been Ethan's favorite part- visited the workers home area, saw a gunpowder demonstration, and enjoyed the beautiful grounds right along the Brandywine River. Ethan also enjoyed smelling the flowers and looking at the DuPont cars, yes they even made cars. You can see that he's learning to read museum labels. The plaque we saw along one of the paths is for a woman who was from Litchfield. She married a DuPont, and was apparently generous to Hagley. She was also generous to us, and left us a gift which we used for our new curatorial center which is named for her. Her home, Mt. Cuba, is also open but we didn't go there. It required reservations and I was lazy. Besides I would have been mortified if Ethan screamed his way through that house too.
